DAWFL Sports Chaplaincy

January brings a lot of reflection to people. The New Year makes them reflect on lost family members and it is generally accepted that it is the most depressing month of the year.

We have alarmingly high rates of both depression and also suicide in N. Ireland and especially amongst young men.

We at Sports Chaplaincy hope to provide a listening ear to any player who is suffering from depression.

The first step is to share this with someone.

Unfortunately many feel that to share it with friends or team members shows a weakness. Men have to be strong and footballers are tough. The toughest decision you will ever make is admitting to yourself and then confiding in someone how you feel.

I am willing to be that someone.

Don’t let it get you down to the point of no return.

I have had close friends who have committed suicide and others who have admitted to me that they nearly did.

The league have had several players and teams affected by this.
